The benefit here with the 2gb nvidia card is windows can switch back and forth between either video card solution as per needs and requirement. Now, in addition to the i7-4500U cpu / Intel 4400 Graphics, my laptop also has a dedicated nvidia 740m graphics card with 2gb onboard dedicated ram, much like a desktop system with a nvidia or ati/amd PCI-e graphics card. It does have 3d acceleration capabilities like a dedicated nvidia or ati/amd graphics card but without the dedicated onboard memory wich can play certain games fine, and the other game types not so well.

Which is fine for desktop browsing, youtube / dvd movie watching. One main caveat is that the video processing has no actual onboard memory but uses the system's shared DDR3 / DDR4 memory instead. It's a combination CPU with built in graphics processing, negating the need for a dedicated graphics card.

I myself have an Asus Windows 8.1 Laptop with an i7-4500U mobile cpu which has the integrated Intel Graphics 4400 GPU video GPU.

It's still an incredibly capable, future-proof GPU and it's leaps and bounds better than the base 580X offered by default on the Mac Pro builder. There's a couple things to understand first: The W5700X is built on the Navi-10 architecture most recently shown off in the Sony PlayStation 5 technical reveal, so don't be turned off by the lower price tag. For gamers or people who primarily edit smaller videos ( YouTube video producers perhaps) going with the cheaper W5700X is a much smarter choice.

For professional editors frequently working with 4K-8K footage, both would be sufficient, but the gap between the two cards matters more. Both are immensely powerful cards, but given that the Vega is built for rendering video first, those differences can be significant on large files. Radeon Pro W5700X is capable of 9.4 TFLOPS while Pro Vega II goes up to 14.1. As one would expect, a cheaper GPU also sacrifices power. A single Vega II increases the build price by $2,400, which is $800 more than the cost of adding two W5700Xs. When configuring a Mac Pro on the Apple website, it's apparent that the W5700X is less expensive than the Vega II. The full-size module is sold separately for $1,000 as well. Adding one 16 GB GDDR6 W5700X to the build means a price increase of $600, and there's also an option to add two of the GPUs (complete with an additional four Thunderbolt ports and an HDMI 2.0 port) for $1,600.

Apple offers the new graphics card both in the initial configuration process and as a standalone module in case the user wants to upgrade from the lackluster 580X. Apple Final Cut Pro X: Best For Video Editing?Īs of this week, however, the company has added the powerful, but more affordable Radeon Pro W5700X to the list of selectable graphics cards. Apple gave the option of swapping it for the Pro Vega II, which delivers respectable performance but adds thousands of dollars to the price. Even though it was included in a basic Mac Pro setup at no additional charge, the Radeon Pro 580X was widely criticized for being underpowered given the price and intended purpose of the overall kit. This option creates a solution with greater performance than the Radeon Pro 580X (the lowest-end card available) and a much less expensive alternative to the Radeon Pro Vega II.īefore this change, anyone doing a custom configuration for the new Mac had a choice between the 580X and the Pro Vega II, which were wildly different ends of the spectrum. For those configuring a new 2020 Apple Mac Pro, there's a new graphics card option in the form of the Radeon Pro W5700X.
